Herbs have been very important since the first time my son and I branched
out into the unknown territory of natural alternatives. We knew that by putting
back into the body what was deficient that the symptoms over a period of time
would lessen, but in the meantime we still had to deal with them. Prescription drugs
suppress the symptoms, but in a short period of time they recur. When we use
herbs to work with the symptoms, they rarely have side effects and generally always
work with the body, not against it.

The herbal drops (smart longevity and amps 2) work together to decrease
hyperactivity, increase attention span, and work with the blood flow to the brain.
We initially decreased the prescription drugs and increased the natural drops so
that my son's body didn’t go through any kind of shock. This took time but the
rewards for taking the time and being consistent are endless. The compulsive
behavior and the aggression still had to be addressed so we added Valerian Root,
Kava Kava, and St. John’s Wort. These herbs are considered controversial for
some individuals but in other countries they have been used for hundreds of years,
even in hospitals. The three herbs listed above, provides a considerable amount of
control and better attitude was displayed without altering my son’s personality in
any type of derogatory manner. His appetite increased and he gained much needed
weight along with the developing better self-esteem.

I have noticed that by adding the above herbs to our program we are both
able to cope better with situations and people with whom we come in contact.
During the allergy season herbal teas lessen hyperactivity often displayed during
this season. It calms both of us and helps in sleep.
Herbs will be listed along with their uses to increase your knowledge and for
later application on the following page. I included examples of teas that we use
and a list of what you will need so that you can do this yourself at home.
Remember that it is always advisable to consult a knowledgeable physician
before implementing something new into your existing program.

Herbs -

Catnip - used to relax and soothe, has been known to be used instead
of marijuana, great in teas for insomnia.

Chamomile - helps you rest and eases crankiness

Valerian root - has been used to treat epilepsy brought on by strong
emotions, helps reduce insomnia, soothes anxiety, and lowers blood

Vervain - relieves nervousness,

Sweet marjoram - soothes nerves

Lavender - relaxes

Motherwort - eases insomnia, jittery nerves, anxiety

Passionflower - eases emotional turmoil, insomnia, headaches, relieves
muscular and nervous tension, and a natural sedative

Skullcap - brings about calming effect, counteracts antispasmodic
properties, relieves muscle tension caused by stress

St. John’s Wort - relieves depression, emotional problems, and

Rosemary - eases nervous tension and defuses tension headaches

Hawthorne - opens coronary arteries improving blood flow to the

Ginseng - normalizes out of whack body functions,

Licorice - used as a neutralizer in many herbal teas, anti
inflammatory, anti viral, and has anti allergic compounds

Peppermint - natural sedative and tastes great in teas

Spearmint - natural sedative and tastes great in teas

Comfrey root - used in other countries to help soothe nerves, promotes
growth of healthy cells, and provides a source of B12

Things needed to make tea:

coffee filter
tea kettle

Calming tea
½ teaspoon peppermint(or spearmint)
½ teaspoon catnip
1 teaspoon honey
makes approximately two cups

Compulsive behavior
¼ teaspoon valerian root
¼ teaspoon catnip
¼ teaspoon licorice
¼ teaspoon passionflower
¼ teaspoon scullcap
1 teaspoon honey
makes approximately two to three cups

Children’s happy sleep
1 teaspoon Spearmint (or Peppermint)
1 cup milk
1 cookie

¼ teaspoon feverfew
¼ teaspoon rosemary
¼ teaspoon passionflower
1 teaspoon honey

Place herbs in coffee filter and twist tight
Take twister and twist/seal
Place into one cup of water (or milk) - microwave for 3 minutes and
let stand or boil in tea kettle with two cups of water and boil
approximately 5 minutes and let stand)
Add honey last

Today I would like to address Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. I cannot tell you how many times people I know have brought up the fact that they know someone who has gained weight, been depressed, felt sluggish, can't get motiva...ted, has felt aches/pains, cold feet, dry skin/hair, and after some testing find out that they have Hypothyroidism. What is not talked about is that Hashimoto's Thyroiditis has a multitude of the same symptoms.
A blood test can verify whether or not you have a high TSH level which will indicate just how low your thyroid level is. I have Hypothyroidism and take a Naturethroid of 2 grains from a naturopathic doctor. It has stabilized my thyroid and I make sure to eat protein, nuts, and the other foods to keep my thyroid healthy. It is also important to take vitamin D, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, selenium, zinc, copper, vitamin A, the B vitamins. You can take them in pill form or you can find these in foods that you can eat. Vitamin D is important all the way around and D1000 taken daily with Calcium in the evening will process into the body. Calcium is not only good for our bones but is a natural relaxant while Vitamin D helps to ward off cancer. It is best to get your Iodine from seafood, eggs,asparagus, lima beans, mushrooms, spinach, sesame seeds, summer squash, Swiss chard, and garlic. 
Our Vitamins, Minerals, and Trace Elements have many medicinal properties to help the body stay strong and help the mind stay healthy. To ensure that your body has enough of the Vitamins, Minerals, etc. have a blood test to verify what your body is lacking in it's nutrients. There are many tests available in various forms. If your conditions persist than you may want to have a MRI or Ultrasound to have your Pituitary Gland checked. I have both a primary doctor and a naturopathic doctor that I go to, but have found for my thyroid the naturopathic doctor was more detailed in diagnosing. This may not be your case, but educate yourself as much as you can prior to going in to be checked so that you can ask valid questions that will both provoke thought and follow through from your physician. Vitamin D Deficiency

Today's topic is Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is necessary for calcium absorption, mineral deposits in bones and teeth, and much more. A great source for Vitamin D is egg yolks, fatty fish, butter, fortified milk, and our least favorite cod liver oil. I take a D3 1000mg a day and also eat 3 eggs in the morning. Some of the symptoms for this deficiency are nervousness,diarrhea, inability to sleep good (insomnia), and burning sensation in the mouth and throat. What is really important is to catch this early in children because for them it can result in bone deformation. When I wrote my book Nutrition Made Simple I did not realize that it would be a fundamental tool for me in addressing my own symptoms but also those of family and friends. I'll be mixing up my blogs addressing various topics that are in my three books that I'm asked about. I'm hoping that you will enjoy reading them, getting answers you've wondered about, and I can be helpful in making your day a better one.

PMS.... I'm here to help!

This post is to help those suffering from PMS and to offer some help in how to cope through those days of none comfort. 

The women in my own family have had a history of PMS with terrible headaches, bloating, problems sleeping, irritability, and more.  The best advice my own father gave me was to take care of myself so that way I would feel better and so no one would be able to guess what time of the month it was.  Relationships suffer during this time and though I do believe that men have their own certain something going on it's not fair to behave badly if you have some alternatives.

Here is what the doctor told me that helped - 7 days prior to PMS is to take an Ibuprofen each day along with Calcium.  I try to take Calcium daily as it also helps me to have a great nights sleep because it naturally relaxes me.

What my mother shared with me is to take a B complex (moods) daily, Magnesium, drink lots of water(lessens water retention), and eat bananas.  Bananas are a great source of Potassium.

So what did I do? Funny you should ask! I did all of the above! I normally take a Multi-Vitamin, Magnesium, Potassium, Vitamin E, and Vitamin A.  I also, in the morning take 3,000 Mg of Vitamin C as it keeps the immune system going and helps my allergies.   I don't take the Vitamin C at night as it would keep me up.

On the worst day, I would take a muscle relaxer(over the counter) and 2 Ibuprofen.  This would take the edge off and I could actually smile in the midst of it.

Guys this is information to be treasured as this helps more than words!  Ladies I believe in keeping them guessing!

Vitamin C and Zinc for the Common Cold

Tis the season for many of us to start getting the sniffles, cough, and sore throats so I thought this would be the time to help others help themselves to getting better. 

Whether you are working or not we all come into contact with people so our chances of catching the common cold or flu is something hard to hide from.  What is not commonly known is that both Vitamin C and Zinc can work together to boost your immune system. Vitamin C and Zinc can be taken in larger dosages during an illness and excess of either will be voided(exited) from the body.  

Vitamin C with a cold or flu is best taken in the morning and noon after a meal as to not upset the stomach.  To fight an illness 2,000 mg in the morning and noon along with drinking orange juice will kick start you to getting better. 

Zinc can be taken morning, noon, and night after a meal. A suggestion of three 50 mg of Zinc after a meal during illness speeds up healing.

Vitamin C sources are fruits, broccoli, potatoes , green peppers, spinach, cabbage, and those are just to name a few.

Zinc is a Mineral and food sources for it are seafood, beef, whole grains, soybeans, lentils, chicken, and mushrooms to start.

My hope is that you add to your daily regimen Vitamin C (1,000 mg) at least and Zinc (50 mg) to help you stay healthy. 

It is always good to consult a physician or naturopathic doctor when starting anything new or if you have questions.

Nutritional Supplementation at All Ages

I realize that I come across all for natural alternatives to prescription drugs and that is mostly correct.  However, I see where there are circumstances where a prescription drug does the job when it is followed up with nutrition.   My mother is a prime example.  She is now 79 and lives near me, but there was a time when she was living in Florida under my sister's care and she was on medications that basically made her a walking zombie. My sister placed her into an assisted living facility and it was not good. My mother doesn't really remember it. Finally she got into a nice Assisted Living Facility and was blessed to have a doctor and pharmacist that saw she needed a change in her medications along with nutritional supplementation.

  Long story short I took over and moved my mother out where I live and she is living independently.  This is due to the fact that she is taking her prescriptions and a load of vitamins/minerals.    Each person's body is different and has specific needs and sometimes even though the prescription works it leads to deficiencies that have to be met through supplementation.  What is included in my mother's prescription list is Calcium w/D, B complex w/C, D3 1,000, Iron, B12, Fish Oil, and Potasium.  She takes about 2,700 mg of Potassium, but her body will not function right without it. This is where I know that there has to be a balance of feeding the body through diet or supplementation.  The two can work together.

 If my mother had not gotten off the wrong prescriptions and put on the right ones with supplementation she would not be where she is now. I have my mother back in body and mind after many years. It's nice to have her back and it's nice to have her close.  The first moment you look into your baby’s eyes time stops and your desire to protect what God has given you is all encompassing. 
     It was not until my child was over a year of age that I began to notice changes in his behavior that were not typical of other children his age and it was getting progressively worse.  I couldn’t initially explain what I couldn’t see that was going on inside of my child.  This invisible disability would later have many names that for me would be the beginning of discovery and a chance to make his life better. 
     I divorced my son’s father before my son was a year of age and felt it was best for the both of us.  What I did not realize until much later was that my ex-husband has Attention Deficit Hyper Disorder.  Since I had no prior experience or knowledge about this disorder as it was an invisible disability.
     The ex-husband’s parents did nothing to help their son and saw nothing wrong with their grandchild. It was all the same to them and that only made matters worse.  There was no consistency of routine, candies, and he was constantly getting sick.
     My own family had brought me up with routine and my mother raised us in the basic nutrition of eating balanced meals.  She helped me to start writing a diary of all foods eaten at our home and to find out what my son was eating at the grandparents as they had visitation.  The connection between foods and how they are processed can bring about adverse reactions. Red and yellow dyes brought about bad conduct with my son and were eliminated from his diet.  All of these steps helped but did not stop the progression.
     The darkest moment of dealing with this invisible disorder that only I could see was when your child is crying that they want to be a good boy and seeing the struggle going on inside him that he could not control himself. It is hard to explain the ache from within myself for my son to want to make it better for him. 
     What made my life lighter in one aspect was putting names to what I was finding out was happening to my son. The invisible becomes more tangible when you can put a definition or meaning to it.  These symptoms he was expressing had names.
     This invisible disability became visible with other parents, teachers, and those who lived near us that were able to see us on a regular basis.  They began to see consistencies in how he reacted in various situations of home, school, and socializing.  Family members and quite a few other people felt the solution was to put my son on prescription drugs.  This works for a lot of children and good nutrition, but with my son he was an exception to the rule. Prescription drugs for him were just a Band-Aid and he just kept getting worse.
    The challenge for me as a parent was to take the information that had been given to me and figure out what steps that I needed to do to help my son so that he could lead a normal life.  My beliefs and having parents who believed in structure helped me tremendously.  I began with taking those names given to my son’s behaviors and breaking them down into symptoms.  Symptoms became deficiencies within the body that would need to be fed. 
     Fortunately I was funded by a friend to do research to help my son and hopefully to help others worldwide. This was and is our dream.
     Family, friends, and his doctor were not receptive to this natural approach of using Vitamins, Minerals, and Anti-spasmodic Herbs.  Many disagreements and arguments were a way of life until they went from skeptics to believers as my son got increasingly better.
     My life was centered on helping my son and that was all there was to it.  I gave my notice to a couple of jobs as they felt that I should be dating, not writing blogs to help others, and there was more to life than my son.  When I gave birth to my son it was a commitment to being there for him no matter what situation.   A few people I knew thought what I was trying to accomplish was commendable and beneficial to the multitudes.  The people I shared information with and helped them with their child(ren) felt what I was doing was priceless.
     I wrote a couple of books that would answer the questions that I was searching for and give options available.
     What I can tell you now is that my son was diagnosed and later undiagnosed due to nutrition and anti-spasmodic herbs. The icing on the cake is that he is a consistent blessing to me and others.  He went into the service and was asked to be on Honor Guard.  He just finished Honor Guard and is planning on becoming a Psychologist and Japanese interpreter as soon as he gets out.
    My challenge to you is to start seeking solutions today!

Nutrition Made Simple discussing Zinc

Just looked at my Nutrition Made Simple book and was just having a bit of fun looking at the symptoms of various Vitamins, etc. Did you know that if you don't take enough Zinc that you could have a couple of these symptoms? Zinc is a Mineral. Without enough Zinc you have delayed wound healing, delayed sexual response, fatique, and much more!

Handling Consequences with Children

This post is about how to handle consequences with children when they are caught doing something they shouldn't. Before, during, and after writing "Correcting Learning & Behavioral Disorders Naturally" how to handle your child who reacts and loses control when they are being punished for doing something they shouldn't have led many parents to run away and hide themselves! There have been many times that is what I wanted to do, but what I learned is that when your child has done something they shouldn't the way to approach this whether your child has a disorder or not is... to tell the child the following:
 1. what you did was wrong and why (do not fall into the trap of them trying to turn it around on you)it was there choice and you physically did not make them make that wrong choice
2. hopefully you have learned that what you did was wrong, but if you make that mistake again you will have to choose between two punishments. Depending upon how your child reacts it is up to you to tell them the two punishments that they will have to choose from.
 3.  FOLLOW THROUGH! If they react like it doesn't matter, it does so don't fall for that.
Many children whether they have disorders or not have learned how to push your buttons and it is only through follow through that they gain respect for you.  If your child does have disorders than it is through mega vitamin therapy and anti spasmodic herbs that your child will start to be able to gain more control over themselves making your job easier. I've been there!  It's worth the effort and the rewards are endless...
I hope this helps parents out there that are struggling on why their child over reacts when disciplined.

Communication in Relationships

I recently had a chance to talk to man who shared with me that his wife left him after many years spent together and that he would ask her what it is that she wanted from him. He stated all she would say is "you should already know what I want.  Ladies I hate to break it to you, but men are not mind readers no matter how much we would like them to be that for us. The movie with Mel Gibson in "What Women Want" is fiction...

Communication is key. There is not a way to get around communicating with your partner whether they are male or female. In relationships it is easy to let the ball drop and not pick it up as fast as you would have when you first met, but there are many ways to get that relationship back to where you both are satisfied.  This is the reason why I wrote Men... It's time to get a CLUE! because there are very few mind readers in this world and even though it is scary to open up and share what your needs are it is a far cry better than keeping a closed mouth.  I used to feel that as a woman men should already know what I want, but they really don't! Each of us are uniquely different and what works for one person may not for another, so they are scared to make a mistake that will turn us away from them.

I've spoken with a lot of men and women of what they needed from their partners to make it work, but both had a hard time verbalizing those needs to their partner. It's funny that we can tell our close friends what is wrong but the person who needs to hear it the most is left wondering what it is that will make us happy.

This book does a lot of the talking for you and hopefully will open up that door to talking more freely. It will hopefully make you appreciate the good things that they do and leaving the book in the bathroom or table without saying anything is a good way to start. Many women have even bought the book for their girlfriends as a confirmation as it is written in a light non aggressive manner that hits on all the hot topics.  Men have said after reading it themselves that they saw some of their partners in this so it's not one sided. Either way, both have seen and experienced more warmth after reading it and applying it.

Here's one fun tip to keep it from getting boring - get a half dollar and keep it with you so that when you both cannot make up your mind on a restaurant or movie, etc. ... Flip the coin and just go with it. Be impulsive and go with the flow.  It takes the stress out of it and is freeing for both. Live on the edge!  http://www.michellebeverbooks.com
